Question

Is this incident true?

A robber stole ‘Umar’s ibnul Khattab (radiyallahu ‘anhu) turban in the marketplace and ran. ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) ran after him shouting: “I bear witness to Allah that I have given it to you, so say: “I accept it” so that the Hellfire doesn’t touch you!”

Answer

I have not come across this incident occurring to Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

A similar incident appears in Rawdur Rayahin of ‘Afifud Din ‘Abdullah ibn As’ad Al Yafi’i (rahimahullah) regarding ‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah).

Al Yafi’i (rahimahullah) writes: “It reached me that a thief once snatched the turban of Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah). ‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) followed him and ran behind him saying, “I have made you the owner of it, say, “I accepted it.” However, the thief was unaware of this.

(Rawdur Rayahin, pg. 380, incident number: 482. Also see: Al Manhalul ‘Adhbur Rawi Fi Tarjamati Qutbil Awliya An Nawawi of ‘Allamah Sakhawi, pg. 26)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
