Question

Can you please tell me the authenticity of this Hadith as I have seen this on social media?

“When a thing disturbs the peace of your heart, give it up!”

Answer

You are probably referring to the Hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim and many other Hadith collections.

Sayyiduna Nawwas ibn Sam’an (radiyallahu ‘anhu) once asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) regarding righteousness and sin. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Righteousness is good character and sin is what troubles the heart [causes uneasiness in the heart] and you dislike that people should come to know of it.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2553. Refer: Al Minhaj of ‘Allamah Nawawi, Hadith: 6463)
