An unlawful gaze leads to other sins

Question

Is this narration suitable to quote?

الإثم حوّاز القلوب، وما من نظرة إلا وللشيطان فيها مطمع

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu). He has recorded two other similar narrations as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) as well.

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 8748-8749-8750)

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)

(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 5051)

‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) states: “It has been stated that the correct version is the mawquf one.” [i.e. As the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud radiyallahu ‘anhu].

(Targhib, vol. 3 pg. 36/37)

The narration is therefore suitable to quote as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud radiyallahu ‘anhu.

Translation

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “Sins [affect] the heart. And whenever there is a [haram] glance, Shaytan has hope [as the haram glance will lead to other evils].

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
