Question

Is this narration authentic?

When the verse was revealed ‘You [O Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] are but a warner and every nation has a guide’ [Surah Ra’d, Verse: 7], Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) placed his hand on his chest and said, ‘I am the warner and every nation has a guide’. He then indicated to the shoulder of ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and said, ‘You are the guide O ‘Ali, The rightly guided will be guided through you after my demise’

Answer

Imam Ibn Jarir (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration under the commentary of the above mentioned verse. However Hafiz Ibn Kathir (rahimahullah) has declared the text of the Hadith extremely unreliable (nakaratun shadidah). The Hadith is not suitable to quote.
