Question

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“You are not superior to a [white] or black-skinned person unless you excel him in piety.” (Musnad Ahmad)

Is this narration reliable?

 

Answer

Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5, pg. 158)

Allamah Mundhiri and ‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahumallah) have declared the narrators reliable, but state that there is an omission right before the Sahabi.

(Targhib, vol. 3, pg. 612, Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 8, pg. 84)

However, the Hadith is well supported and could be declared authentic due to corroboration. See here and here.

حدثنا وكيع، عن أبي هلال، عن بكر، عن أبي ذر، أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال له: انظر، فإنك ليس بخير من أحمر ولا أسود إلا أن تفضله بتقوى.

الترغيب والترهيب: (٣/ ٦١٢)
وعن أبي ذر رضي الله عنه أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال له: «انظر فإنك لست بخير من أحمر، ولا أسود إلا أن تفضله بتقوى» رواه أحمد، ورواته ثقات مشهورون إلا أن بكر بن عبد الله المزني لم يسمع من أبي ذر.

مجمع الزوائد: (٨/ ٨٤)
وعن أبي ذر «أن النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم – قال له: «انظر، فإنك لست بخير من أحمر ولا أسود، إلا أن تفضله بتقوى». رواه أحمد، ورجاله ثقات إلا أن بكر بن عبد الله المزني لم يسمع من أبي ذر.
