Is this Hadith authentic?

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) emphasised the importance of both; understanding and piety in his advice to Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) when he asked, “O Messenger of Allah, if we were afflicted with a matter wherein there is no permissibility or prohibition, what do you instruct us to do? Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied:

“Consult the jurist and the pious, and do not independently pass a judgement.”

 

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith.

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 1641)

 

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) states, ‘The narrators have been deemed credible (rijaluhu muwatthaqun min ahlis sahih). ‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) has also declared the Hadith authentic.
