In the following Hadith, what is the correct word and translation? Some prints have أَظُنُّنِي and some have أظنه

وحدثنا يحيى بن يحيى قال: قرأت على مالك عن نافع عن عبد الله بن عمر، أنه وصف تطوع صلاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: فكان لا يصلى بعد الجمعة حتى ينصرف فيصلى ركعتين في بيته. قال يحيى أظنني قرأت «فيصلى» أو ألبتة.

Answer

The popular copies of Sahih Muslim have it with the word: أظنني. Some have made reference to a version that has: أظنه. It is normal to have such slight variations in the wording of Hadiths.

In this case the meaning of both is very similar. This is Imam Yahya ibn Yahya’s reference to when he recited the Hadith to his teacher, Imam Malik (rahimahumallah).

• If the word is read as أظنني, then the translation would be: “I think that I read: فيصلي, or I am sure I did so.”
• If the word is read as أظنه, then the ه would be ضمير الشأن and the translation would be: “I think that I read the word as: فيصلي, or I’m sure I did so.”

Translation

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) has described the extra voluntary prayer of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). He said:

“He would not pray after Jumu’ah until leaving. Then he would perform two rak’ahs in his house.”

Yahya ibn Yahya (rahimahullah) [one of the narrators] said: “I think that I read: فيصلي,  [when reading the Hadith to Imam Malik – rahimahullah], or I am sure I did so.”

(٨٨٢) – قال يحيى بن يحيى: أظنه قرأت فَيُصلِّى أو البتَّة، هذا لفظ يُشكل ظاهرُه، وتفسيره: أنه شك هل قرأ على مالك قول النبى صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فيصلى ركعتين، أو غير هذا اللفظ – يركع – أو سقط من كتابه لفظة «يصلى» ثم غالب ظنه ووقوع هذه اللفظة وشهرتها فى حديث مالك، قال: «أو البتة»، أى أنا متردد بين الظن واليقين فى هذه اللفظة تحرياً فى الأداء، رحمه الله…وكان – رحمه الله – مع علمه وحفظه كثير التشكك، حتى لُقِّبَ الشكاك.

(٨٨٢) – وقوله: (قال يحيى: أظنني قرأت: فيصلي، أو ألبتة) قال النووي رحمه الله: معناه أظن أني قرأت على مالك في روايتي عنه: «فيصلي»، أوأجزم بذلك، فحاصله أنه قال: أظن هذه اللفظة، أوأجزم بها. انتهى.
ووقع في بعض النسخ: «أظنه» بضمير الغائب، وعليه فالضمير للشأن، والجملة بعده مفسرة له.
