Question
Kindly provide me with the grading of the following Hadith:
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) has said: The truest of dreams are [those that are seen] in the last portions of the night [i.e. very early in the morning just before true dawn].
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2274, Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith: 4528, and Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 4 pg. 392)
Some scholars have said that the Hadith is weak while others like Imams Ibn Hibban, Hakim, and Dhahabi (rahimahumullah) have all graded it authentic.
Answer
It is normal to find differences of opinion with regards to the classification of Hadiths. For more on this subject, see here.
Imam Ibn ‘Adiy (rahimahullah) has mentioned this Hadith amongst the few Hadiths which he felt Darraj (rahimahullah – one of the narrators in the chain) might have erred.
(Al-Kamil, vol. 3 pgs. 979 – 982)
Nonetheless, Imams Ibn Hibban, Hakim, Dhahabi, and ‘Azizi (rahimahumullah) have all graded this Hadith as authentic.
(Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith: 4528, Mustadrak Hakim along with Talkhisul Mustadrak, vol. 4 pg. 392, As-Sirajul Munir, vol. 1 pg. 213; Also see: Fathul Bari, Hadith: 7000)
We concur with this view.
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
