What is the reference for this Hadith?

We used to consider it one of the greatest sins that a man learns the Quran and goes to sleep without reciting something from it.

عن أبي العالية قال: كنا نعد من أعظم الذنب أن يتعلم الرجل القرآن ثم ينام لاَ يقرأ منه شيئا

 

Answer

This narration is recorded in Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) as the statement of Abul ‘Aliyah, Rufay’ ibn Mihran (rahimahullah), a senior Tabi’i who said:

“We would regard it to be from the greatest of sins that a man learns the Quran and goes to sleep without reciting a portion of it.”

(Kitabuz Zuhd: 1746)

Another version of this narration also recorded in Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Ahmad states:

Abul ‘Aliyah, Rufay’ ibn Mihran (rahimahullah) said: “We would regard it to be from the greatest of sins that a man learns the Quran and goes to sleep without reciting a portion of it to the extent that he forgets the Quran.”

(Kitabuz Zuhd: 1747)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al ‘Asqalani (rahimahullah) has declared this chain authentic (jayyid).

الزهد لأحمد بن حنبل:
(١٤٧٦) – حدثنا عبد الله، حدثني أبي، حدثنا زيد بن الحباب، أنبأنا خالد بن دينار قال: سمعت أبا العالية قال: «كنا نعد من أعظم الذنوب أن يتعلم الرجل القرآن ثم ينام عنه حتى ينساه».

فتح الباري لابن حجر: (٩/ ٨٦، رقم: ٥٠٣٨)
ومن طريق أبي العالية موقوفا: «كنا نعد من أعظم الذنوب أن يتعلم الرجل القرآن ثم ينام عنه حتى ينساه». وإسناده جيد.

وقد أخرج أحمد في كتاب الزهد بسند جيد عن أبي العالية -واسمه رفيع بالفاء مصغر- من كبار التابعين قال: «كنا نعد من أعظم الذنوب أن يتعلم الرجل القرآن، ثم ينام عنه حتى ينساه».
