Question

I would like to know the authenticity of this story as well as references if there are any, please

It is told that on the night of Mi’raj, when Nabi (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) met Nabi Musa, Nabi Musa (‘alayhis salam) asked: “How can your saying: “The scholars of my ummah are like the Prophets of Banu Israil” be true?” Imam Ghazali appeared and he made salam with the addition of “wa barakatuhu wa maghfiratuhu” and others. Musa (‘alayhis salam) asked: “Why do you use such long words in front of elders?” and Imam al-Ghazali replied: “Allah only asked you: “What is this in your right hand O Musa?” and you gave such a long answer: “This is my stick, I lean on it, I conduct my beasts with it and it is also for other purposes.” Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Be polite O Ghazali”

A similar incident is cited in Tafsir Ruhul Bayan. The wording in this version differs from your question.

This was a dream of Imam Shadhili and did not occur on Mi’raj. The Muhaddithun have declared the Hadith “The scholars of my ummah are like the Prophets of Banu Israil” a fabrication. Furthermore, dreams are not credible supports in such issues.

‘Allamah Subki (rahimahullah) has cited a dream of Imam Shadhili wherein Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) boasted about Imam Ghazali without citing any Hadith etc. See it here

وذكر الراغب الاصفهانى فى المحاضرات انه قال الامام الشاذلى قدس سره، صاحب الحزب البحر: اضطجعت فى المسجد الأقصى فرأيت فى المنام قد نصب تحت خارج الأقصى فى وسط الحرم فدخل خلق كثير أفواجا أفواجا. فقلت: ما هذا الجمع؟ فقالوا: جمع الأنبياء والرسل عليهم السلام قد حضروا ليشفعوا فى حسين الحلاج عند محمد عليه السلام فى اساءة ادب وقعت منه. فنظرت الى التخت، فاذا نبينا صلى الله عليه وسلم جالس عليه بانفراده وجميع الأنبياء على الأرض جالسون، مثل ابراهيم وموسى وعيسى ونوح عليهم السلام فوقفت انظر واسمع كلامهم فخاطب موسى نبينا عليه السلام .وقال له: انك قد قلت «علماء أمتي كانبياء بنى إسرائيل» فارنا منهم واحدا! فقال: هذا، وأشار الى الامام الغزالي قدس سره. فسأله موسى سؤالا، فاجابه بعشرة اجوبة، فاعترض عليه موسى بان الجواب ينبغى ان يطابق السؤال والسؤال واحد والجواب عشرة. فقال: الامام هذا الاعتراض وارد عليك ايضا حين سئلت: وَما تِلْكَ بِيَمِينِكَ؟ وكان الجواب عصاى فاوردت صفات كثيرة. فقال: فبينما انا متفكر فى جلالة قدر محمد عليه السلام وكونه جالسا على التخت بانفراده والخليل والكليم والروح جالسون على الأرض إذ رفسنى شخص برجله رفسة مزعجة اى ضربنى فانتبهت فاذا بقيم يشعل قناديل الأقصى قال لا تعجب فان الكل خلقوا من نوره فخررت مغشيا فلما أقاموا الصلاة أفقت وطلبت القم فلم أجده الى يومى هذا ومن هذا قال فى قصيدة البردة.
وانسب الى ذاته ما شئت من شرف … وانسب الى قدره ما شئت من عظم.
