Question

‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu anhu) said:

“In the later times will be people who will sit in the Masajid, forming circles. Their Imam will be the Dunya (the world). Do not sit with them. Allah has no need of them.”

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) on the authority of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “Close to the end of time, there will be people who will sit in the Masjids, forming circles. Their leader will be the dunya (the world)/In front of them will be the dunya [i.e. their only concern will be this worldly life]. Do not sit with them. Allah has no need of them.”

(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 10452)

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has stated that the chain consists of a narrator who has been labelled as a fabricator (نسب الى الوضع).

(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 2 pg. 24)

However, The subject matter in this Hadith is reported in other acceptable Hadiths. These should be quoted instead. See here and here

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
