Is there any basis for sitting or gathering in a Halqah?
Answer
Yes, there is basis for sitting in a Halqah-style gathering for the purpose of remembering Allah, learning, and other Dini discourse.
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) recorded the following Hadith under the chapter heading: The one who sits where the gathering ends, and the one who sees an opening in the halqah and sits in it.
Sayyiduna Abu Waqid Al-Laythi (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates: “While Rasulullah (sallallahu ’alayhi wa sallam) was sitting in the masjid with some people, three men arrived. Two appeared before Rasulullah (sallallahu ’alayhi wa sallam) whilst one left. They remained by [the gathering of] Rasulullah (sallallahu ’alayhi wa sallam), then one of them saw a gap in the halqah and sat there, as for the second, he sat at the back and as for the third, he turned and left. When Rasulullah (sallallahu ’alayhi wa sallam) finished, he said: ’Shall I inform you about the three people? The first attached himself to Allah, so Allah accommodated him [with His happiness and mercy], as for the other, he felt shy, so Allah treated him accordingly [by not depriving him, or holding him accountable] and as for the last, he turned away, so Allah turned away from him.’”
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) writes: ”A halqah refers to a circular gathering with an open centre… This Hadith indicates the istihbab of sitting in a circle in gatherings of Dhikr and ‘Ilm”.

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded the following Hadith.
Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates that Sayyiduna Mu‘awiyah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) entered upon a halqah in the Masjid and asked, ‘What has brought you together here?’ They replied, ‘We have gathered to remember Allah.’ He asked, ‘By Allah, is that the only reason you have gathered?’ They replied, ‘By Allah, that is the only reason we have gathered.’
Sayyiduna Mu‘awiyah then said, ”I did not ask you to swear because of any suspicion. There was no one of my standing with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) who narrated fewer Hadiths from him than I did.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) once came upon a halqah of his Sahabah and asked, ‘What has brought you together here?’ They replied, ‘We have gathered to remember Allah, praise Him for guiding us to Islam, and for the favour He has bestowed upon us.’ He asked, ’By Allah, is that the only reason you have gathered?’ They replied, ’By Allah, that is the only reason we have gathered.’
He said, ‘I did not ask you to swear because of any suspicion. Rather, Jibril came to me and informed me that Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla boasts of you before the angels.’”

(66) – حدثنا إسماعيل قال: حدثني مالك، عن إسحاق بن عبد الله بن أبي طلحة: أن أبا مرة مولى عقيل بن أبي طالب أخبره: عن أبي واقد الليثي: أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بينما هو جالس في المسجد والناس معه، إذ أقبل ثلاثة نفر، فأقبل اثنان إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وذهب واحد، قال: فوقفا على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فأما أحدهما: فرأى فرجة في الحلقة فجلس فيها، وأما الآخر: فجلس خلفهم، وأما الثالث: فأدبر ذاهبا. فلما فرغ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «ألا أخبركم عن النفر الثلاثة؟ أما أحدهم فأوى إلى الله فآواه الله، وأما الآخر فاستحيا فاستحيا الله منه، وأما الآخر فأعرض فأعرض الله عنه».

والحلقة بإسكان اللام كل شيء مستدير خالي الوسط والجمع حلق بفتحتين، وحكي فتح اللام في الواحد، وهو نادر. وفيه استحباب التحليق في مجالس الذكر والعلم، وفيه أن من سبق إلى موضع منها كان أحق به.
صحيح مسلم:
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة ، حدثنا مرحوم بن عبد العزيز ، عن أبي نعامة السعدي ، عن أبي عثمان ، عن أبي سعيد الخدري قال: خرج معاوية على حلقة في المسجد فقال: ما أجلسكم؟ قالوا: جلسنا نذكر الله قال: آلله ما أجلسكم إلا ذاك؟ قالوا: والله ما أجلسنا إلا ذاك قال: أما إني لم أستحلفكم تهمة لكم، وما كان أحد بمنزلتي من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أقل عنه حديثا مني، وإن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم خرج على حلقة من أصحابه فقال: «ما أجلسكم؟» قالوا: جلسنا نذكر الله، ونحمده على ما هدانا للإسلام، ومن به علينا قال: «آلله ما أجلسكم إلا ذاك؟» قالوا: والله ما أجلسنا إلا ذاك قال: «أما إني لم أستحلفكم تهمة لكم، ولكنه أتاني جبريل فأخبرني أن الله عز وجل يباهي بكم الملائكة».
