Madinah is a respected place and even the weakest Muslim’s covenant should be honoured

Question

What is the meaning of the following words يسعى بها أدناهم، فمن أخفر مسلما in this Hadith:

Answer

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

The explanatory translation of the Hadith is as follows:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Madinah is sacred/respected territory. Whoever innovates something therein or grants refuge to an innovator then upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels and all of mankind. On the Day of Qiyamah, obligatory acts nor supererogatory acts will be accepted from him.”

Another version further mentions:

“The protection granted by Muslims is one and the same, therefore even the lowest/weakest Muslim’s protection [that he granted] will be [honoured by all]. Whoever breaks the covenant of safety granted by a Muslim, then upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels and all of mankind. On the Day of Qiyamah, obligatory acts nor supererogatory acts will be accepted from him.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1371. Refer: Sahih Muslim with Al Minhaj, Hadith: 3314-3315 and Fathul Mulhim, Hadith: 3302-3303)
