Question

Is the following authentic?

Marry, for the best person of this ummah [Nabi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] had many wives. The reference given is Sahih Bukhari.

 

Answer

This narration is certainly recorded in Sahih Bukhari.

Sa’id ibn Jubayr (rahimahullah) said, “Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) asked me, ‘Are you married?’ I replied, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Marry, for the best person from this Ummah [i.e., Nabi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam] had the greatest number of wives.’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 5067)

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) explained that remaining unmarried is not preferable. If it it was the preferred thing to do, the Nabi of Allah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would have certainly remained unmarried. Rather, he chose to marry several women.

صحيح البخاري:
(٥٠٦٧) – حدثنا إبراهيم بن موسى، أخبرنا هشام بن يوسف، أن ابن جريج أخبرهم، قال: أخبرني عطاء، قال: حضرنا مع ابن عباس جنازة ميمونة بسرف، فقال ابن عباس: هذه زوجة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فإذا رفعتم نعشها فلا تزعزعوها، ولا تزلزلوها، وارفقوا فإنه «كان عند النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم تسع، كان يقسم لثمان، ولا يقسم لواحدة».

فتح الباري:
(٥٠٦٩) – عن سعيد بن جبير عن بن عباس تزوجوا فإن خيرنا كان أكثرنا نساء قيل المعنى خير أمة محمد من كان أكثر نساء من غيره ممن يتساوى معه فيما عدا ذلك من الفضائل والذي يظهر أن مراد بن عباس بالخير النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وبالأمة أخصاء أصحابه وكأنه أشار إلى أن ترك التزويج مرجوح إذ لو كان راجحا ما آثر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم غيره.
