Question

What is the meaning of وأَخَذُوا أخَذاتِهِمْ in the following Hadith?

Answer

Qadi Iyadh (rahimahullah) has mentioned that the word أخذاتهم can either refer to:

  • “The bounties of Allah Ta’ala that they have been blessed with”. The meaning of the phrase would then be: “O my Rabb, how [can I enter Jannah and reside therein] whereas the people have [already] settled down in their dwellings/abodes and have [already] engaged in the bounties they have been bestowed with.

or

  • “The pathways leading to their intended abodes”. The meaning would then be: “O my Rabb, how [can I enter Jannah and reside therein] whereas the people have [already] headed for their intended abodes by following their [appropriate] pathways.”

(Ikmalul Mu’lim, Hadith: 189)

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.

In both instances, the inferred meaning is that, the sayer is of the impression that there is no place for him in Jannah.
