Question

Is there a Hadith which states:

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) received a garment from someone. When he wore it and came out, someone from the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) saw him and he asked Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) for it. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) immediately went to his house, wore his old clothes and gave the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) the new one. The Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) reprimanded the other Sahabi (radiyallahu ‘anhu) who asked for Nabi’s (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) new dress because Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would never deny someone’s request. The Sahabi (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said that he had his own reason, to shroud himself in that piece of cloth when he passed away.

Is there any source and authenticity for this?

Answer

This Hadith is recorded by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) in his Sahih on the authority of Sayyiduna Sahl ibn Sa’d (radiyallahu’anhu).

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1277 and 2093).

The narrator; Sayyiduna Sahl (radiyallahu’anhu) states:

1. Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) actually needed it himself, but preferred to accede to the request of the Sahabi (radiyallahu’anhu).

2. True to his word, that Sahabi (radiyallahu’anhu) did use it as his shroud (kafn) when he passed away.

Lastly, this Hadith proves the practice of taking barakah (Tabarruk) from the belongings of the pious.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 1277)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
