Question
Is there a Hadith stating that shepherds or people who look after sheep and cows are calm?
Answer
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said:
“…Pride and haughtiness is [found] in the owners/shepherds of horses and camels as well as the [cattle] farmers.
Whilst calmness is [found] in the owners/shepherds of sheep/goats.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 3301, 3302 & 3499. Also see Hadith: 3498 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 183-185)
This reason for such effect in the different farmers is due to the nature of the animals that they herd as well as due to the high value of horses, camels and cattle. Thus their owners tend to develop pride over their abundant wealth.
(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 3301)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
