Question

I read the following Hadith in an email:

Sayyidatuna Asma bint Abu Bakr (radiyallahu ‘anha) had a garment that belonged to Rasulullaah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam). Whenever anyone fell ill in Madinah, the garment would be washed, the water given to the ailing person to drink and the garment draped over his body. The person would then be cured.

[Sahih Muslim, Hadith number: 5409]

Please can you confirm this Hadith, as Sahih Muslim is said to end at number 3000 (approximately) and this is 5409.

Answer

This Hadith does appear in Sahih Muslim.

There are two different popular numberings of Sahih Muslim.

One of them excludes the repeated Hadiths. The total number of Hadiths in this edition is: 3033

And the other edition actually numbers the repeats as well. The total number of Hadiths in this edition is: 7479.

You are probably using the first one.

However, after checking the edition that includes the repeats in its count, the mentioned Hadith in your query doesn’t appear at the given Hadith number.

It’s actually found at Hadith number: 5376

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
