Question

Is there any significance of reciting Surah Jumu’ah on a Friday?

Answer

1) I have not come across an authentic Hadith which encourages general recitation of Surah Jumu’ah on a Friday. However Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would recite this Surah in the Jumu’ah Salah.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhum) report that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would recite Surah Jumu’ah and Surah Munafiqun in the Jumu’ah Salah.

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 877 and 879)

2) Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would not sleep until he recited certain Surahs. Among them were the ‘Musabbihat’ [Those Surahs which begin with some form of Tasbih, ie. Surah Hadid, Surah Hashr, Surah Saf, Surah Jumu’ah, Surah Taghabun and Surah A’ala]

Sayyiduna ‘Irbad ibn Sariyah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would recite the ‘Musabbihat’ before he slept, and he would say ‘These Surahs contain a verse which is better than a thousand verses’

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3406. Imam Tirmidhi has declared the above narration as sound –hasan-. Also see ‘Amalul Yawmi Wal Laylah of Imam Nasa’i, Hadiths: 713-715)

The above narration is general and includes Thursday night.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best
