Kindly provide the reference and Arabic for this narration:
Ibn Mubarak said: “Mu‘awiyah is a test for us. Whoever we see looking at Mu‘awiyah with hostility, we suspect him of harbouring ill feelings towards the people — meaning the Companions of Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).”
Answer
This narration is recorded in Tarikh Dimashq of Hafiz Ibn ‘Asakir (rahimahullah).
Imam ‘Abdullah ibnul Mubarak (rahimahullah) (Demise: 181 A.H.) said: “Mu’awiyah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) is, in our view, the criterion by which love for the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) is tested. Therefore, whoever looks at Mu’awiyah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) with contempt, we will regard him as one who harbours hatred towards all the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum).”
