What is the reference for this statement widely attributed to Imam ‘Abdullah Ibnul Mubarak (rahimahullah)?

“Returning one doubtful dirham is better than giving one hundred thousand dirhams in charity”

 

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abid Dunya (rahimahullah) has recorded this statement of Imam ‘Abdullah ibnul Mubarak (rahimahullah). The wording is as follows:

Imam ‘Abdullah ibnul Mubarak (rahimahullah) said: “To return a single doubtful dirham is more beloved to me than giving one hundred thousand [dirhams], then another, until the amount reaches six hundred thousand [dirhams] in charity.”

(٢٠٦) – حدثني أبو عبد الرحمن المروزي قال: سمعت علي بن الحسن بن شقيق قال: سمعت عبد الله بن المبارك يقول: «لأن أرد درهما من شبهة أحب إلي من أن أتصدق بمائة ألف ومائة ألف حتى بلغ ستمائة ألف».
