Question

Is this Hadith authentic?

“A sick/ailing person should perform Salah standing. If he finds it difficult, then he should perform Salah sitting. If he finds it difficult, then he should perform Salah lying down, making movements with his head. If he finds it difficult, then he should engage in the remembrance of Allah.”

 

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith.

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The sick person should offer Salah while standing. If he experiences difficulty, he should offer Salah sitting. If the difficulty persists, he should offer Salah lying down making movements with his head. If he finds difficulty in that too, then he should engage in tasbih [i.e., He should not offer the Salah and make qada once he recovers].”

The chain of narrators has been declared weak.

المعجم الأوسط:
(٤٠٠٩) – حدثنا علي بن سعيد الرازي قال: نا محمد بن يحيى بن فياض الزماني قال: نا حلبس بن محمد الضبعي قال: نا ابن جريج، عن عطاء، ونافع، عن ابن عباس، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «يصلي المريض قائما، فإن نالته مشقة صلى جالسا، فإن نالته مشقة صلى نائما يومئ برأسه، فإن نالته مشقة سبح».
لم يرو هذا الحديث عن ابن جريج إلا حلبس، تفرد به: محمد بن يحيى بن فياض.

التلخيص الحبير: (٢/ ٦٤١)
(١١٥٣) – وروي أيضا من حديث ابن عباس مرفوعا «يصلي المريض قائما، فإن نالته مشقة صلى نائما يومئ برأسه إيماء، فإن نالته مشقة سبح» وفي إسنادهما ضعف.

مجمع الزوائد ومنبع الفوائد: (٢/ ١٤٩)
(٢٩٢٢) – وعن ابن عباس عن النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم – قال: «يصلي المريض قائما فإن نالته مشقة صلى جالسا فإن نالته مشقة صلى نائما يومئ برأسه فإن نالته مشقة سبح».
رواه الطبراني في الأوسط وقال: لم يروه عن ابن جريج إلا حلس بن محمد الضبعي، قلت: ولم أجد من ترجمه وبقية رجاله ثقات.
