Question

After burial of the deceased some people give adhan on the grave, they say “It comforts the dead in the horrid loneliness of the grave”, is the calling of the adhan permissible and is this proven from sunnah or the sahabah?

After burial of the deceased some ‘Ulama do talqin to the deceased. Is this proven from the sunnah or the sahabah?

Please provide reference for the above from Hadith.

Answer

Talqin of the deceased means: to remind him of the answers that he needs to provide when questioned in the grave.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) instructed us with the following:

“When any of your bretheren dies and you cover his grave with sand, then one of you should stand at the head side and say: O so and so, the son of so and so! (when this is said) the deceased sits up in his grave. After saying this for the third time, the deceased will respond: Guide me, may Allah have mercy on you.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said: You cannot hear him, but you should respond by saying:

Remember the Shahadah (Testimony) with which you left the world; that there is no deity but Allah, and Muhammad is his slave and messenger. (Remember that) you are pleased with Allah as your Lord, Islam as your religion, Muhammad (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) as your Prophet and the Quran as your guide.

After saying this, Munkar and Nakir (the two angels who usually question the inmates of the graves) take each other’s hand and say: “Let’s leave, why should we sit with him when he has already been reminded of his answers”

(Al-Mu’jamul Kabir of Tabarani, vol.8 Hadith: 7979)

Imam Diyaud Din Al-Maqdisi (rahimahullah) has confirmed this narration as strong. Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has declared is as suitable and has cited other supports for it too. (Talkhisul Habir, vol.2 pg.310. Also see I’laus Sunan, vol.8 pg.210)

I haven’t seen any proof for calling the adhan at the grave side.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
