Question

Is Hadith 3788 in Sunan Tirmidhi authentic? The Hadith is regarding holding on to the Quran and Nabi’s (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) family. Some contemporaries have declared it weak.

Answer

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith you are referring to sound (hasanun gharib). In addition to this, the Hadith is corroborated.

Sayyiduna Zayd ibn Arqam (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “I am leaving behind such things that if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray after me. One of them is greater than the other, the Book of Allah is a rope extended from the sky to the earth [i.e., it is the link between a person and Allah] and my family, my ahlu bayt. These two will never split until they meet me at the Pond [of Kawthar] so look at how you deal with them after me.”

(٣٧٨٨) – حدثنا علي بن المنذر الكوفي، قال: حدثنا محمد بن فضيل، قال: حدثنا الأعمش، عن عطية، عن أبي سعيد، والأعمش، عن حبيب بن أبي ثابت، عن زيد بن أرقم قالا: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إني تارك فيكم ما إن تمسكتم به لن تضلوا بعدي أحدهما أعظم من الآخر: كتاب الله حبل ممدود من السماء إلى الأرض. وعترتي أهل بيتي، ولن يتفرقا حتى يردا علي الحوض فانظروا كيف تخلفوني فيهما.
هذا حديث حسن غريب.
