Question

What is the status of this Hadith?

أفضل الذكر لا إله إلا الله، وأفضل الشكر الحمد لله

Answer

Imam Kharaiti (rahimahullah) has recorded these words in his book ‘Fadilatush Shukr lillah’.

Sayyiduna Jabir (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say: ” The best dhikr is ‘La ilaha illallah, and the best word of gratitude [to Allah] is ‘Alhamdulillah”

(Fadilatush Shukr lillah, Hadith: 7)

The Hadith is suitable to quote and is well supported by the following Hadith:

Sayyiduna Jabir (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“The best dhikr is ‘La ilaha illallah, and the best du’a is ‘Alhamdulillah”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3383)

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has classified the above Hadith sound (hasan). See further references here.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.

هذا حديث حسن غريب، لا نعرفه إلا من حديث موسى بن إبراهيم.
وقد روى علي بن المديني، وغير واحد عن موسى بن إبراهيم، هذا الحديث.
