Question
Kindly provide the reference for the following du’a to recite when leaving home:
اللهم سلمني وسلم مني
Answer
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this du’a in Al Adabul Mufrad as the du’a recited by Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) whenever he would leave his home.
Muslim ibn Abi Maryam (rahimahullah) reports that Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) would recite the following du’a when leaving home:
اللَّهُمَّ سَلِّمْنِي وَسَلِّمْ مِنِّي
Transliteration: Allahumma sallimni wa sallim minni
Translation: O Allah, Protect me and keep others protected from me
(Al Adabul Mufrad, Hadith: 1196)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.

My esteemed teacher; Al-‘Allamatul Muhaddith Shaykh MUhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) has the habit of reciting this du’a when leaving in his car. I first heard it from Shaykh (hafizahullah) in the year 2001. Shaykh mentioned at that time, that his teacher; Shaykh ‘Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah (rahimahullah) had this habit as well. When I shared this with my beloved father (rahimahullah), he too included it in his recital. May Allah Ta’ala inspire us all to practice.
