Question
What is the level of authenticity of this Hadith?
Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Learn the Quran and then recite it. For the likeness of the one who learnt the Quran, recited it, and stood up reciting it, is like a bag filled with musk, whose fragrance spreads all over the place.”
Answer
Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded this as part of a longer Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). He has declared the Hadith sound (hasan).
The part in question with the explanatory translation is as follows:
Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Learn the Quran [the words as well as the meanings], and [habitually] recite it, for the likeness of the one who learnt the Qur’an, recited it, and upheld it [i.e. practised upon it] is like a bag filled with musk, whose fragrance spreads everywhere…”
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2876 and Tuhfatul Ahwadhi, Hadith: 2876)
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
