Question

Can you provide the reference for the narration which states that Salah will be the first thing a person will be questioned about on the Day of Qiyamah?

Answer

Imams Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and others (rahimahumullah) have recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). The part in question as appears in Sunan Tirmidhi is as follows:

“…The first thing a person will be questioned about from his actions [deeds which deal with huququllah- rights of Allah Ta’ala] will be Salah. If his Salah is in order then he has certainly succeeded. If however, it is not in order then he is unsuccessful and has incurred a loss…”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 413, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 860 and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1425)

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith sound (hasan).
