Question

Is this Hadith authentic?

“When any one of you gets up in the morning in the state of fasting, he should neither use obscene language nor do any act of ignorance. And if anyone slanders him or quarrels with him, he should say: “I am fasting, I am fasting.”

 

Answer

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith in Sahih. The Hadith is therefore authentic.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrated: “When one of you begins the day fasting, let him neither indulge in obscene language nor act ignorantly. If someone insults him or quarrels with him, let him say: “I am fasting, I am fasting [and desist from retaliating].”

صحيح مسلم:
(١١٥١) – حدثني زهير بن حرب، حدثنا سفيان بن عيينة، عن أبي الزناد، عن الأعرج، عن أبي هريرة، رضي الله عنه رواية، قال: «إذا أصبح أحدكم يوما صائما، فلا يرفث ولا يجهل، فإن امرؤ شاتمه أو قاتله، فليقل: إني صائم، إني صائم».

صحيح البخاري:
(١٨٩٤) – حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة، عن مالك، عن أبي الزناد، عن الأعرج، عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: «الصيام جنة فلا يرفث ولا يجهل، وإن امرؤ قاتله أو شاتمه فليقل: إني صائم مرتين».
