What is the reference for this narration?

إن البيت ليتسع على أهله وتحضره الملائكة وتهجره الشياطين، ويكثر خيره أن يقرأ فيه القرآن، وإن البيت ليضيق على أهله وتهجره الملائكة، وتحضره الشياطين، ويقل خيره أن لا يقرأ فيه القرآن.

Answer

Imam Darimi (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as the statement of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) used to say: “When the Quran is recited in a home, that house becomes spacious and comfortable for those who live there. Angels remain present within it, devils stay away from it, and its blessings increase. But when the Quran is not recited in a home, that house becomes cramped and uncomfortable for its inhabitants. The angels depart from it, devils enter it, and its blessings decrease.”

(Sunan Darimi, Hadith: 3352)

Note: The nature of this narration is not such that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) could have made applying logic. It would therefore be understood that he heard this from Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).
