What is the authenticity of the following narration?

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The strong person is not the one who can lift heavy weights. Rather, the strong person is the one who is in control of his soul while in a state of anger.”

Answer

This narration is recorded in many Hadith collections with slight variations in the wording.

The wording as appears in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim is as follows:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The strong person is not one who can outwrestle, rather, the [real] strong person is he who can control himself while in a state of anger.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6114, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2609)

صحيح مسلم:
(٢٦٠٩) – حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى، وعبد الأعلى بن حماد، قالا: كلاهما قرأت على مالك، عن ابن شهاب، عن سعيد بن المسيب، عن أبي هريرة، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: «ليس الشديد بالصرعة إنما الشديد الذي يملك نفسه عند الغضب».
