Has this Hadith appeared with the following wording in any narration?
“From the mountain he [i.e. Rasulullah – sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam] asked the people of Makkah:
‘If I say on the other side of the mountain your enemy is there will you believe me?’
Everyone said: “if you say on the other side of the mountain there is the enemy, we will believe you. You are truthful to the people. We all know you to be truthful.”
He [sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam] said: ‘I warn you of the punishment which will come! Whoever does not accept Allah to be one, a big punishment will come upon him! I warn you from this big punishment and call you to believe in one Allah.’
I have not come across the exact aforementioned wording.
Hereunder is a version of this narration recorded by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah):
Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) has narrated: “When the following verse was revealed:
“And warn your closest relatives [Surah Shu’ara, Verse: 214]”,
Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) ascended upon [Mount] Safa and began to call out to the tribes of Quraysh: ‘O Bani Fihr, O Bani ‘Adiyy’
Until they had all gathered. If a man was unable to come out, he sent a delegate to see what it was. Abu Lahab came as well as the [rest of] Quraysh.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) then said: ‘Tell me, if I were to inform you that there is an army by the valley, which intends to attack you, would you believe me?’
They said: “Yes! We have only experienced truthfulness from you!”
He said: ‘Indeed, I am most definitely warning you of a severe punishment ahead!’
Abu Lahab then said: “May destruction come to you for the rest of your life! Have you merely gathered us for this? “
The following verses were then revealed: “May the hands of Abu Lahab be destroyed, and may he be destroyed! Neither his wealth nor the things he earned shall benefit him! [Surah Lahab]””
