Question

Imam Ghazali (rahimahullah) has mentioned two short surahs to read after eating, Surah Ikhlas and Surah Quraysh.

Is this authentic?

Answer

Imam Ghazali (rahimahullah) has cited this as a recommended deed after eating without attributing it to any Hadith. It should be understood to be an etiquette after meals without deeming it Sunnah.

(Ihya ‘Ulumid Din, vol. 3, pg. 27)

‘Allamah Zabidi (rahimahullah) has explained the possible reason for this recommendation of Imam Ghazali (rahimahullah). Reciting Surah Ikhlas will bring about barakah and repel poverty since it is equal to a third of the Quran. This Surah is called ‘Surah Ikhlas’ which should serve as a reminder for a person to check his sincerity. Further, this Surah mentions that Allah Ta’ala is ‘Samad’ i.e., Self-sufficient/independent and does not require food and drink which is the opposite to us, humans, These should be kept in mind when reciting Surah Ikhlas.

Surah Quraysh discusses affection/unity and protection from hunger and fear. This should serve as a reminder for these bounties that a person just enjoyed.

(Ithafus Sadah al Muttaqin, vol. 5, pg. 225)
