Question

I am looking for the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Umar ibnul Khattab (radiyallahu ‘anhu) wherein he stated on the mimbar, “By Allah, I will make it difficult for a man who relates a Hadith different from it (the ‘amal of Ahlul Madinah).”

Answer

Qadi ‘Iyad (rahimahullah has cited this statement of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “I forbid/deem sinful for a man to report a Hadith that contradicts the established practice [of the people of Madinah].”

(Tartibul Madarik, vol. 1, pg. 66. Also see: Atharul Hadith, pg. 99)

Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) emphasised the importance of ensuring a Hadith is backed up by the practice of the Scholars. At times, mere authenticity is not sufficient.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
