Question

Can I get the reference of this statement and is there any mention of who were the other three authorities?

I have heard that ‘Urwah ibn Zubayr (rahimahullah) said: “Before ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) passed away, I saw that I became one of the four authorities. If she passes away, no Hadith will be lost from those she knew as I have memorized all of them.”

Answer

This statement of ‘Urwah ibn Zubayr (rahimahullah) appears in Tahdhibul Kamal, Tarikhul Islam and Siyaru A’lamin Nubala.

The following version appears in Tahdhibul Kamal and Siyaru A’lamin Nubala:

‘Urwah ibn Zubayr (rahimahullah) said [advising some youngsters]: “What is the matter with you? Why aren’t you seeking knowledge? If you are currently a junior in your community, you will soon be a senior. And what is the benefit of a senior if he is ignorant? Before the demise of ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha), I was one of four or five authorities. If she had to pass away today, I will not have any regret of [missing] any Hadith from her as I have memorised them all.” Now, if I hear of a Muhajir [Sahabi] having a Hadith, I will go to him. If I find that he is asleep, I will wait at his door and ask him [to report it to me] when he leaves home.”

(Tahdhibul Kamal, vol. 20, pg. 17, Siyaru A’lamin Nubala, vol. 4, pg. 424)

The following version appears in Tarikhul Islam:

‘Urwah ibn Zubayr (rahimahullah) said: “Before the demise of ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) I saw that I was one of the four authorities.

(Tarikhul Islam, vol. 4, pg. 1140)

I have not come across a version of this narration wherein he specifies the other authorities. In all likelihood, he was referring to the other Fuqaha of Madinah viz. Sa’id ibnul Musayyab, ‘Abdul Malik ibn Marwan, Qabisah ibn Dhuayb and ‘Urwah ibn Zubayr himself.

(Refer: Siyaru A’lamin Nubala, vol. 4, pg. 425)
