Is the following an authentic Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)?

“We are a nation who do not eat until we are hungry and when we eat, we do not eat to our fill”

 

Answer

I have not come across this Hadith in any primary Hadith source.

‘Allamah Burhanud Din Al Halabi (rahimahullah) has cited this as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) without a chain of narrators nor did he mention the source. I am therefore unable to verify the authenticity.

(Insanul ‘Uyun Fi Siratil Aminil Ma-mun; As Sirah Al Halabiyyah, vol. 3, pg. 300)

The following Hadith could be quoted instead:

Sayyiduna Miqdam ibn Ma’di Karib (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, I heard Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say, “Man does not fill a container more evil than his belly. It is sufficient for man to eat that amount which straightens his back [i.e., a few morsels to gain some energy]. If this is not possible then a third for food, a third for drink and a third for air”

وقد قال بعضهم: إن المقوقس أرسل مع الهدية طبيبا، فقال له النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: «ارجع إلى أهلك نحن قوم لا نأكل حتى نجوع وإذا أكلنا لا نشبع».

سنن الترمذي:
(٢٣٨٠) – حدثنا سويد بن نصر قال: أخبرنا عبد الله بن المبارك قال: أخبرنا إسماعيل بن عياش قال: حدثني أبو سلمة الحمصي، وحبيب بن صالح، عن يحيى بن جابر الطائي، عن مقدام بن معدي كرب، قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «ما ملأ آدمي وعاء شرا من بطن. بحسب ابن آدم أكلات يقمن صلبه، فإن كان لا محالة فثلث لطعامه وثلث لشرابه وثلث لنفسه» حدثنا الحسن بن عرفة قال: حدثنا إسماعيل بن عياش، نحوه، وقال المقدام بن معدي كرب: عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ولم يذكر فيه سمعت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: «هذا حديث حسن صحيح».

سنن ابن ماجه:
(٣٣٤٩) – حدثنا هشام بن عبد الملك الحمصي قال: حدثنا محمد بن حرب قال: حدثتني أمي، عن أمها، أنها سمعت المقدام بن معد يكرب، يقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «ما ملأ آدمي وعاء شرا من بطن، حسب الآدمي، لقيمات يقمن صلبه، فإن غلبت الآدمي نفسه، فثلث للطعام، وثلث للشراب، وثلث للنفس».
