Question

Could you kindly provide the reference and authenticity of this quote:

“[Before Qiyamah] Desires and whims will be the motivating factor for carrying out deeds. Know well that good guidance/teachings in these times is better than carrying out certain deeds”

Answer

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) in Al Adabul Mufrad. This is the ending of a narration wherein Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was describing the changes in time.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has graded the chain authentic (sahih) and further adds that the nature of this Hadith is not such that could be made up using logic. [It will therefore be understood that Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) heard this from Nabi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam].

Disclaimer: In principle, the signs of Qiyamah are ambiguous and nuanced and only Allah Ta’ala Knows their precise timing and exact application. One should certainly take heed from such Hadiths and signs, despite their application to specific events being open to interpretation.

(٧٨٩) – حدثنا عبد الله بن أبي الأسود قال: حدثنا عبد الواحد بن زياد قال: حدثنا الحارث بن حصيرة قال: حدثنا زيد بن وهب قال: سمعت ابن مسعود يقول: «إنكم في زمان: كثير فقهاؤه، قليل خطباؤه، قليل سؤاله، كثير معطوه، العمل فيه قائد للهوى. وسيأتي من بعدكم زمان: قليل فقهاؤه، كثير خطباؤه، كثير سؤاله، قليل معطوه، الهوى فيه قائد للعمل، اعلموا أن حسن الهدي، في آخر الزمان، خير من بعض العمل».

فتح الباري لابن حجر:
(٦٠٩٨) – وأخرج البخاري في الأدب المفرد من طريق زيد بن وهب سمعت بن مسعود قال: «اعلموا أن حسن الهدي في آخر الزمان خير من بعض العمل» وسنده صحيح ومثله لا يقال من قبل الرأي فكأن بن مسعود لأجل هذا كان يحرص على حسن الهدي.
