Question

What is the status of the following Hadith?

“Allah Ta’ala personally created four things, His throne, Jannah, Adam and the pen”

 

Answer

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). He has declared the Hadith authentic and ‘Allamah Dhahabi concurs.

Note:

1) The narration should be quoted as reported, i.e. as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). However the nature of this Hadith is not such that he could have made up applying logic. Therefore, it will be understood that he heard this from Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

2) The following Hadith recorded by Imam Abush Shaykh Al Asbahani explains the Hadith in question:

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) says, “Allah Ta’ala personally created four things, Adam, His throne, the pen and Jannah. And he said to the rest of creation ‘kun’ [be] and it became”

المستدرك للحاكم: (٢/ ٣١٩)
حدثنا الشيخ أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أنبأ محمد بن ريح السماك، حدثنا يزيد بن هارون، أنبأ سفيان بن سعيد، عن عبيد الكاتب المكتب، عن مجاهد، عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما، قال: «خلق الله أربعة أشياء بيده: العرش، وجنات عدن، وآدم، والقلم، واحتجب من الخلق بأربعة: بنار، وظلمة، ونور، وظلمة».
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد ولم يخرجاه.

الأسماء والصفات للبيهقي:
(٧٥٧) – أخبرنا محمد بن عبد الله الحافظ، ثنا أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أنا محمد بن ربح السماك، ثنا يزيد بن هارون، أنا سفيان بن سعيد، عن عبيد المكتب، عن مجاهد، عن ابن عمر، رضي الله عنهما قال: «خلق الله تبارك وتعالى أربعة أشياء بيده: العرش، وجنات عدن، وآدم، والقلم؛ واحتجب من الخلق بأربعة: بنار، وظلمة، ونور، وظلمة». هذا موقوف، والحجاب يرجع إلى الخلق لا إلى الخالق.

العظمة لأبي الشيخ الأصبهاني:
(٢١٥) – حدثنا إبراهيم بن محمد، حدثنا العلاء بن سالم، حدثنا إسحاق الأزرق عن سفيان، عن عبيد المكتب، عن مجاهد، عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما، قال: «خلق الله تبارك وتعالى بيده أربعة أشياء: آدم، والعرش، والقلم، وجنة عدن، وقال لسائر الخلق: كن، فكان».
