Question

Is this narration authentic?

A man said: “O Messenger of Allah! Which of the people are the best?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied: ‘He whose life is long and his deeds are good.’ He asked: ‘Then which of the people are the worst?’ Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied: ‘He whose life is long and his deeds are evil.'”

Answer

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). He has declared the Hadith authentic (hasanun sahih).

(٢٣٣٠) – حدثنا أبو حفص عمرو بن علي قال: حدثنا خالد بن الحارث قال: حدثنا شعبة، عن علي بن زيد، عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي بكرة، عن أبيه، أن رجلا قال: يا رسول الله أي الناس خير، قال: «من طال عمره، وحسن عمله»، قال: فأي الناس شر؟ قال: «من طال عمره وساء عمله»: «هذا حديث حسن صحيح».
