Question

Can you site the source and grading of the following Hadith:

There is a Hadith where someone will have so much good deeds, but because he usurped the rights of other people all his good deeds will be transferred to the victims, and he will inherit his/their bad deeds resulting in his downfall (Jahannam).

Answer

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded the Hadith you are referring to in his Sahih. The narration is therefore authentic.

The full text is as follows:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Do you know who is a bankrupt person?” They (the Sahabah) said: “A poor man among us is one who has neither Dirhams nor any goods.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “The [real] pauper from my Ummah would be he who will come on the Day of Qiyamah with Salah, fasts and Zakah but he had hurled abuses upon someone, slandered others, unlawfully consumed the wealth of someone, shed the blood of another and struck others. So his good deeds will be credited to these people [who suffered at his hand]. If his good deeds get depleted before he can settle [those he oppressed], then their sins will be flung onto him and he would be thrown in the Fire.

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2581)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
