Question

Kindly provide the reference and exact wording for the following Hadith.

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) that the inability to weep is caused by the hardness of the heart, which results from excessive sin, which is caused by the love of this world, which stems from  ambition, which is caused by the forgetfulness of death. Can you please give me the exact wording?

Answer

Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“The inability to weep is due to committing excessive sins. That is due to not fearing Allah which results in the hardness of the heart. The hardness of the heart is caused by the love of the world.”

(Musnadul-Firdaws, vol. 4, pg. 402; Hadith 6690)

Note: The chain of narrators for this Hadith is quite weak. (Tanzihu-Shari’ah, vol. 2, pg. 314).

However, the broader meaning of this Hadith by supported through other traditions.

أنس بن مالك: «ما جفوة العيون إلا من كثرة الذنوب، وما كثرة الذنوب إلا من قلة الورع، وما قلة الورع إلا من كثرة الجفاء، وما كثرة الجفاء إلا من حب الدنيا».

تنزيه الشريعة: (٢/ ٣١٤) 
حديث: «ما جفوة العين إلا من كثرة الذنوب، وما كثرة الذنوب إلا من قلة الورع، وما قلة الورع إلا من كثرة الجفاء، وما كثرة الجفاء إلا من حب الدنيا» (مي) من حديث أنس، قلت: لم يبين علته، وفيه من لم أعرفه، والله تعالى أعلم.
