Question
What is the authenticity of the following two narrations?
- Anyone who falls ill in Makkah for one day, Allah makes his body and his flesh haram (forbidden) for the fire of Jahannam. (Attributed to Sahih Bukhari)
- Anyone who falls ill in Makkah for one day, Allah records for him that person the rewards of having done good deeds equivalent to sixty years worship in any other place. (Attributed to Muwatta of Imam Malik)
Answer
Neither of these is in Sahih Bukhari or in the Muwatta of Imam Malik (rahimahullah).
I have not come across a chain for either of these statements. Therefore, the authenticity cannot be verified.
Both statements are cited as the words of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), in a booklet on the virtues of Makkah attributed to Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) without any chain.
(Fadailu Makkah of Hasan Basri, pg. 27)
The second statement (sixty years) has been cited by Imam Halimi (rahimahullah), also without a chain.
(Al-Minhaj fi Shu‘abil Iman, vol. 2, pg. 421)
See a similar narration here.
One should exercise caution when attributing a Hadith to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), as well as to any authentic Hadith collection.
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
