Question

I came across the following incident. Is it reliable and are the words attributed to Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) authentic?

A Lion is Submissive to Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu anhuma)

Wahb ibn Aban Al Qurashi reported that Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) was travelling on a journey when they saw a crowd of people standing by the road. “What is the matter with those people?” Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) enquired. “There is a lion on the road frightening them,” came the reply. Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) got off his animal, walked up to the lion and held its ears. He then twisted its ears, slapped its nape and moved it off the road. Thereafter, he said: “Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not lie to you. I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say, “Only that which man fears will be given the upper hand over him and if he fears none besides Allah, Allah will not allow anything else to gain the upper hand over him. Man is also handed over to that which he entertains hopes in and if he pins his hopes in none other than Allah, Allah will not hand him over to anyone else.”

This narration is recorded in Tarikh Dimashq of Imam Ibn ‘Asakir (rahimahullah).

‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has expressed reservation about the authenticity of this incident (لم يصح هذا). In Mizanul I’tidal, under the biography of the problematic narrator, ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has declared the narration a fabrication.

أخبرنا أبو بكر محمد بن الحسين نا أبو الحسين بن المهتدي انا أبو أحمد عبيد الله بن محمد بن أبي مسلم الفرضي أنا عثمان بن أحمد بن السماك نا إسحاق بن إبراهيم بن سنين  نا عثمان بن سعيد نا عبد الوهاب أبو محمد نبأ بقية بن الوليد عن بكر بن حذيم الأسدي عن وهب بن أبان القرشي عن ابن عمر: أنه خرج في سفر له، فبينما هو يسير، إذا قوم وقوف. فقال: ما بال هؤلاء؟ قالوا: أسد على الطريق قد أخافهم. فنزل عن دابته ثم مشى إليه حتى أخذ بأذنه فعركها، ثم غمز قفاه ونحاه عن الطريق، ثم قال: ما كذب عليك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «إنما تسلط على ابن آدم من خافه ابن آدم ولو أن ابن آدم لم يخف إلا الله لم يسلط عليه وإنما ابن آدم، وكل بني آدم لمن رجا ابن آدم ولو أن ابن آدم لم يرج إلا الله لم يكله إلى غيره».

روى: بقية، عن ابن حذيم، عن وهب بن أبان القرشي:
أن ابن عمر خرج، فبينما هو يسير، إذا أسد على الطريق قد حبس الناس، فاستخف ابن عمر راحلته، ونزل إلى الأسد، فعرك أذنه، وأخره عن الطريق، وقال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وقال: «لو لم يخف ابن آدم إلا الله لم يسلط عليه غيره». لم يصح هذا

ذكره الأزدي فقال: متروك الحديث مجهول، غير مرضي.
ثم أسند له من طريق بقية عن ابن عمر رفعه: لو أن آدم لم يخف إلا الله لم يسلط عليه غيره … الحديث وفيه قصة لابن عمر مع الأشقر.
