Question
Is this incident correct or is it a fabrication?
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was once with ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and they had dates. As they were about to finish, ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) saw some people approaching. He quickly moved the pile of pits that he had to Nabi’s (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) pile and jocularly told the passersby that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa salam) had kept all the dates to himself and didn’t share! In good spirits, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said right back: “Look at ‘Ali, he eats the dates and the pits as well! (because he didn’t have any pits on his side).”
Answer
I have not come across this incident in any reliable source. A similar narration appears in Shi’i books. The narration in question should not be quoted until it can be sourced and then verified.
In Ansabul Ashraf, Imam Baladhuri [Demise: 892 A.H.] has cited a similar incident in a different context which occurred between Tha’labah ibn Harith ibn Hasabah and Abu Durayd, Summah ibn Summah.

وأكل ذات يوم التمر ومعه عليّ وكان يجمع النوى عند عليّ فلما فرغا قال: «يا علي إنك لأكول» فقال: يا رسول الله الأكول من أكل التمر ونواه.

ومنهم: الحارث بن بيبة بن قرط بن سفيان بن مجاشع، وكان شريفا وكان من أرداف الملوك…
وكان الصمة أبو دريد بن الصمة جارا للحارث، فلم يحمد جواره…
ثم إن الصمة أتى عكاظ بعد ما شاء الله، وحرب بن أمية بعكاظ يطعم الناس، فدخل وثعلبة بن الحارث بن حصبة بن أزنم بن عبيد اليربوعي عليه، فأكلا، وقدم إليهما تمر فجعل الصمة يأكل ويلقي النوى بين يدي ثعلبة، فلما فرغا قال ثعلبة للصمة: إنه لا نوى بين يديك أفكنت تبلع النوى؟ إنك لكبير البطن. فقال الصمة: بطني عظيم من دمائكم، هل لك علم بالجعد بن شماخ؟ قال: وما ذكرك رجلا أنعم عليك فكفرته وأتاك لتثيبه فقتلته والله لا رأيتك بغائط من الأرض إلا طلبت دمك، وافترقا.
