Question
What is the correct dabt/pronunciation of the word (ضار) at the end of the following Hadith? with Tashdid or without?
أن رجلا جاء إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: إني أعزل عن امرأتي، فقال له رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: لم تفعل ذلك؟ فقال الرجل: أشفق على ولدها أو على أولادها، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: لو كان ذلك ضارا، ضر فارس والروم.
وقال زهير في روايته: إن كان لذلك فلا ما ضار ذلك فارس، ولا الروم .
Answer
Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Usamah ibn Zayd (radiyallahu ‘anhu).
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1443)
Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) states that the ra in ضَارَ is read without tashdid (بتخفيف الراء). It comes from ضَارَ يَضِيرُ ضَيْرًا which means “to harm.”
(Sharhun Nawawi ‘ala Muslim, Hadith: 3552)
Translation of the Hadith:
Sayyiduna Usamah ibn Zayd (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrated that a man came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and said, “I practise coitus interruptus with my wife.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asked him, “Why do you do that?” The man replied, “I fear for her child [i.e. he feared that intercourse while she was breastfeeding or pregnant might harm the child].” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “If that were harmful, it would have harmed the Persians and the Romans.”
In another version, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “If that is the reason, then [don’t do it], it did not harm the Persians or the Romans.”

شرح النووي على مسلم: (10/ 18)
(3552) – قوله صلى الله عليه وسلم (ما ضار ذلك فارس ولا الروم) هو بتخفيف الراء أي ما ضرهم يقال ضاره يضيره ضيرا وضره يضره ضرا وضرا والله أعلم.
