Kindly provide the reference for this incident:

Iyas ibn Mu’wiyah (rahimahullah) was crying when his mum passed away. Someone asked him, “Why are you crying?” He replied: “Once upon a time I had two doors that opened to heaven. But now one of them has closed.”

Answer

Imams Ibn ‘Asakir and Ibnul Jawzi (rahimahumullah) have recorded this incident regarding the Tabi’i, Iyas ibn Mu’awiyah (rahimahullah).

When Iyas’s ibn Mu’awiyah mother passed away, he began to weep. When he was asked the reason for crying, he replied, “I had two doors open to Jannah. Now, one of them has been shut.”

Iyas ibn Mu’awiyah (rahimahullah) realised that serving his parents and them supplicating for him will be a means for him to attain Jannah. When his mother passed away, one of these avenues were shut.

أخبرنا أبو سعد أحمد بن محمد بن البغدادي، أنا أبو عمرو بن مندة، أنا الحسن بن محمد بن أحمد، أنا أبو الحسن اللّبناني، حدّثنا أبو بكر بن أبي الدنيا، حدّثني محمد بن الحسين، حدّثنا عبيد الله بن محمد، حدّثني حمّاد بن سلمة، عن حميد قال: لما ماتت أم أياس بن معاوية بكى فقيل: ما يبكيك يا أبا واثلة؟ قال: كان لي بابان مفتوحان من الجنة فأغلق أحدهما.

(٦٠) – أنبأنا يحيى بن ثابت بن بندار، قال: أخبرني أبي، قثنا بشرى بن عبد الله، قال: أنبأ محمد بن جعفر بن الهيثم، قثنا إبراهيم الحربي، قثنا عبيد الله بن عائشة، قثنا حماد، عن حميد، قال: لما ماتت أم إياس بن معاوية بكى، فقيل: ما يبكيك؟ قال: كان لي بابان مفتوحان إلى الجنة، وغلق أحدهما.
