Is this correct? What is the Arabic text?
Ibn Hajar al ‘Asqalani (rahimahullah) said:

“Often, the high status of women was unknown because of their haya (modesty) and because they used to stay in their homes, so hardly anyone knew their status.”

(Al Matalibul ‘Aliyah)

Answer

This quote is actually from the annotator [a contemporary] of Al Matalibul ‘Aliyah and not from Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) himself. It should, therefore, not be quoted as the statement of Hafiz ibn Hajar Al Asqalani (rahimahullah).

Note: The book “Al Matalibul ‘Aliyah” was authored by Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah). Perhaps this is the reason for the confusion.

(١٦٦١) – إسناد أبي يعلى ضعيف، فيه حبابة بنت عجلان، وأمها أم حفص، وصفية بنت جرير لا يعرف حالهن، وكثيرا ما نجد في النساء مجهولات الحال والسبب في ذلك حشمتهن وقعودهن في خدورهن فلا يعرف من أحوالهن شيء حتى يأتيهن اليقين، ممتثلات أمر الكبير المتعال: {وقرن في بيوتكن ولا تبرجن تبرج الجاهلية الأولى…} الآية، أما في زماننا هذا فقد تنكر النساء لمثل هذه الأوامر، وخرجن من بيوتهن ابتغاء الفتنة، فالله المستعان، فنحن في آخر الزمان.
