Question
Is it true that if you start a nafl act of worship and then leave it out, this can cause harm?
Answer
Abandoning a regular optional practice out of negligence is discouraged.
Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“O ‘Abdullah! Do not be like so-and-so, who used to perform [optional] Salah at night and then gave up praying at night.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1152, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1159)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) explains that giving up a regular act of worship is disliked, even if it is not obligatory. This applies when giving it up shows disregard for ‘ibadah.
(Fathul Bari, vol. 3, pgs. 37–38, under Hadith: 1152)
The importance of consistency is also mentioned in the following Hadith:
Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“The deeds most beloved to Allah Ta’ala are those performed consistently, even if they are few.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 783. See here)
Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has also recorded the following statement of Imam ‘Abdullah ibnul Mubarak (rahimahullah):
“Whoever is negligent regarding etiquette is punished by being deprived of [carrying out] Sunnah deeds. Whoever is negligent regarding Sunnah deeds is punished by being deprived of [carrying out] obligatory deeds. Whoever is negligent regarding obligatory deeds is punished by being deprived of recognising [Allah Ta’ala].”

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
