Is this du’a/istighfar authentic?

رب اغفر لي خطيئتي وجهلي، وإسرافي في أمري كله، وما أنت أعلم به مني، اللهم اغفر لي خطاياي، وعمدي وجهلي وهزلي، وكل ذلك عندي، اللهم اغفر لي ما قدمت وما أخرت، وما أسررت وما أعلنت، أنت المقدم وأنت المؤخر، وأنت على كل شيء قدير

 

Answer

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Musa Al Ash’ari (radiyallahu ‘anhu). The Hadith is therefore authentic.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Al Ash’ari (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would make the following du’a:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي خَطِيئَتِي وَجَهْلِي، وَإِسْرَافِي فِي أَمْرِي كُلِّهِ، وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي خَطَايَايَ، وَعَمْدِي وَجَهْلِي وَهَزْلِي، وَكُلُّ ذَلِكَ عِنْدِي، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ، وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ، أَنْتَ المُقَدِّمُ وَأَنْتَ المُؤَخِّرُ، وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Transliteration: Rabbighfir li khatiati wa jahli wa israfi fi amri kullihi, wa ma anta a’alamu bihi minni, allahummaghfirli khatayaya wa ‘amdi wa jahli wa hazli wa kullu dhalika ‘indi, allahummagh fir li ma qaddamtu wa ma asrartu wa ma a’alantu, antal muqaddimu wa antal muakh khiru wa anta ‘ala kulli shay-in qadir.

Translation: O Allah, forgive my errors and ignorance, my extravagance/immoderation in all of my affairs and what You know best of me. O Allah forgive my sins, what I do intentionally, what I do ignorantly and what I do in jest. All of these [faults] are in me. O Allah, forgive my past and future sins, the sins I committed in private and openly. You are the One Who sends forth and the One Who delays and you are in control over everything.”
