Question

Kindly provide the reference for this:

“My son, do not hope for what is in people’s hands, for it is wealth. Beware of seeking worldly needs, for it is imminent poverty. Avoid saying things you will have to make excuses for, and when you pray, pray as if it’s a farewell prayer, not expecting to return. If you can be better today than you were yesterday, and better tomorrow than you are today, then strive to do so.”

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration:

‘Abdul Malik ibn ‘Umayr (rahimahullah) relates: “A man advised his son saying, My beloved son, Do not have hope in the possessions of people for this is true wealth. Beware of asking for your needs [from people] for this is [true] poverty. Abstain from uttering things that you will have to apologise for. When you offer Salah, offer it as though it is your farewell Salah and if you are able to be better today than you were yesterday and to be better tomorrow than you are today, then do so.”

(Musannaf ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 36741)

Certain parts of this advice appears in a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). See here and Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 4, pg. 326-327.
